You’ll be asked 2 vehicle safety questions during your car driving test.
The examiner will ask you one:
‘tell me’ question (where you explain how you’d carry out a safety task) at the start of your test, before you start driving.
‘show me’ question (where you show how you’d carry out a safety task) while you’re driving.
You need to open the bonnet and tell the examiner how you’d do the check if you’re asked question 12, 13 or 14.
Answer: As soon as you move off, tap the footbrake. It shouldn't feel loose or sink all the way to the floor, and the car shouldn't veer to one side when you slow down.
Answer: Check the car's manual or the sticker inside the driver’s door frame for the right numbers. Use a handheld pressure gauge at a petrol station when the tyres are cold, and don't forget to screw the valve caps back on tightly.
Answer: The rigid part of the headrest should be adjusted so it's at least as high as your eyes or the top of your ears, and it should be positioned as close to the back of your head as is comfortable.
Answer: Take a look around the rubber walls to make sure there are no deep cuts or bulges. For the tread, it needs to be at least 1.6mm deep across the middle of the tyre, all the way around.
Explain you’d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).
Answer: If there's a fault with the anti-lock brakes, a specific 'ABS' warning light will pop up on the dashboard and stay lit.
Answer: Hit the hazard light button—that puts on all the indicators at once. Then you'd just walk around the car to check that all four corners are flashing.
Answer: Press down on the brake pedal and look for the reflection in a shop window or a garage door behind you. If there’s nothing to reflect off, ask someone to stand at the back and check for you.
Answer: Put a little bit of turning pressure on the steering wheel before you start the engine. As soon as the engine fires up, the wheel should instantly feel light when you turn the wheel compared to when its not started
Switch your dipped headlights on first, then click the fog light switch. You'll see a bright amber symbol light up on the dash. You only ever use these if you can't see further than 100 metres.
Answer: Turn on your normal headlights, then click the stalk on the steering wheel forward. You’ll know the bright high beams are on because a blue headlight icon will light up on your dashboard.
Answer (With Dipstick): Pull the dipstick out under the bonnet, wipe it clean with a cloth, dip it all the way back in, and pull it out again. The oil mark should sit right between the high and low lines.
Answer (Digital Screen): If there's no dipstick, you just turn the ignition on, pull up the car's digital screen menu, and look at the vehicle status layout to see the electronic oil reading.
Answer: Look for the clear plastic tank under the bonnet filled with coloured liquid. Look at the side of the tank to make sure the fluid level sits between the printed maximum and minimum lines.
Answer: Locate the small reservoir bottle near the back of the engine bay and check through the side of the plastic container to ensure the fluid is safely between the high and low markings.
